the universe realigns

i have dropped hundreds of postcards to you
from mailboxes around the world
without an address or a stamp
it was easier that way
i could never share that much
with you, without you
the pictures and words of romance
would've captured you hopelessly
it is impossible to resist
the sirens singing you to shore

you will never see this either
for reasons now obvious
i love your ghost too much
to ever touch the flesh
and from this distance
i still dream
traveling homeless
across the desert dark
in search of someone
i know not where or why

she will come
out of the emptiness
knocking me senseless
with physical powers of influence
and i will be gone
there will be no returning

i was thinking about you again
as the noon rain fell
the feel of the cotton mattress
the weight of damp air
and the last time i saw you
waving from a rooftop

it is sad when the universe realigns
and in the cosmic machinations
something, someone is taken away
while others dance into view
and as the stars enmesh their orbits
on this clear cold night
and gravity is powerless
to hold them together
the constellations still remain
to remind us
we are still here on planet earth
beneath the same twinkling light
